Sri Lanka managed to win 5 gold medals out of total 10 awarded at the 3rd Asian School Chess Festival organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, with the auspices of the Asian and World Chess Federations at Hotel Tourmaline, Kandy from 3rd to 10th January 2008. This is the biggest International Chess Event in Sri Lanka and India, UAE, Syria and Iran along with Sri Lanka participated in the event. |

1st Women`sTournament Added to Fajr International in Iran |

A $6,000 Women`s Open has been added to the traditional $18,000 Fajr International Open Tournament, scheduled 2-10 February 2008 in Orumieh, northwest of Iran organized by the Iranian Chess Federation. Board and lodging shall be provided one man and woman from each national federation. Download Regulations for the Open and Women`s. A FIDE Arbiters Seminar shall be conducted concurrently by FIDE Arbiters Council Chairman Panagiotis Nikolopoulos and Asian Chess Federation Deputy President Casto Abundo. |

$45,000 at stake in 10th Dubai Open, 5-15 April |

A total of $45,000 in cash prizes shall be at stake in the traditional strong Dubai Open scheduled 5-15 April 2008 at the Dubai Chess Club in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Now on its 10th year, the Sheikh Rashed Bin Hamdan Al Maktoum Cup shall be awarded to the winner. The tournament is a 9-round Swiss organized by the Dubai Chess and Culture Club. 108 players include 56 Boys and 56 Girls from 5 Asian Coutries : Syria, Iran, UAE, India and Sri Lanka compete in 10 Categories Boys and Girls Under 7, 9 , 11, 13 & 15 in the 3rd Asian School Chess Championship that held in Hotel Tourmaline Kandy, Sri Lanka from 3 - 10 January 2008. Sri Lanka Chess Federation nominate I.A. Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh as Chief Arbiter and President of Asian Chess Federation Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al-Nehayan as Chief Arbiter of the event. Tournament director Mr. Luxman Wijesuriya and Sri Lanka Chess Federation for first time did a great job by hosting 1 Player in each category. Link:

Vishakhapatnam, Andra Pradesh, India; 2 - 10 January 2008 The Iranian men`s team and the Indian Women`s team lead the Asian Men`s and Women`s Team Championships, respectively, after 3 rounds in Vishakhapatnam, Andra Pradesh, India. Sixteen teams are competing from 7 countries. The winner of the men`s division shall represent Asia in the World Team Championship.
