The 2008 Asian Youth Championships for boys and girls under-8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 age groups shall be organized by the Iran Chess Federation under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation from 15th (arrival) to 22nd July in Tehran. The Iran Chess Federation shall also organize the 2008 Asian Men's and Women's Championships with a total of US$30,000 in cash prizes from 21-30 October. United Arab Emirates President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan attended the royal wedding ceremony of Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifah Al Nahyan, President of the Asian Chess Federation, in Al Ain. Among the thousands of guests present at the functions on 2nd and 4th April were Sheikh Tanoon bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, Rules' Representative in the Eastern Region of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his sons as well as a number of Sheikhs, dignitatires and senior officials. Indian IM Lahiri and Sri Lankan National Champ Anuruddha Share the 1st Prize |

The Sri Lankan National Chess Champion GC Anurudda shared for the 1st place by beating RS Kalugampitiya in the last round at the Sri Lanka Open Chess Championship yeasterday. Anuruddha scored a total of 8 points out of possible nine to make this historical win. But, the International Master Atanu Lahiri was victorius against strong TS Ravi, the other International master from India to win the Championship on the better tie breaker. He lost only to Akhila Kavinda out of nine games while Anuruddha lost to HLM Hapuarachchi. The winner did not play each other due to the total number of participants is very high compared to number of rounds. They shared Rs. 75,000/=, the cash awards for the 1st and 2nd places. |
